In April 1800 he proposed to clean the public arms at 50c each and to stamp them for 12c each. On July 31, 1801 he applied for the position of chief gun-smith of the Armory at Richmond. He was engaged as Master Armorer at 200 pounds/year however, complained with letter of December 8, 1801 that this salary "will barely sufficent for house rent and the support of my family". On April 24, 1802 he informed the Governor that the arms sent by George Wheeler were not of good workmanship but better than those furnished formerly.
